Description
An adult Tree Swallow perches on a dead tree in the Beaver Dam area in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
These beautiful, blue songbirds swoop and soar constantly around the marsh, feeding on the many small insects they catch in the air.
Long ago, this was a wetlands area. Then, in the 1800’s, it was drained for human uses. When it was more recently allowed to return to more natural conditions beavers built dams that flooded the area and brought it back to being a marsh.
This was fatal to the trees that had populated the area during the dry period, as their roots were now perpetually submerged. Standing, dead trees are ecologically known as “snags.” Their trunks and limbs are slowly decomposing and will eventually disappear, while plants more compatible to the wet environment prosper.
