Description
An American coot in Ohio's CVNP Beaver Marsh pulls up some vine-like waterweeds (elodea, I believe) and enthusiastically chows down on them for a fast meal. Plants make up the bulk of their diet.
Although they appear, at first glance, to be a kind of duck they are actually in the rail family. They swim thanks to lobed toes, rather than webbed feet like ducks and geese.
