Description
A pair of Midland Painted turtles scale a rotting log protruding from the Beaver Dam Marsh in Ohio's Cuyahoga Valley National Park.
These small (4 to 10 inch) turtles are the most widespread turtle species in the US, and have been around for 15 million years. Adults in the wild can live for more than 55 years.
Their ability to live a long life is enhanced by finding a good spot like this to keep an eye out for predators!
