Description
Photo 3 in a series of 14 of a great blue heron in the Beaver Marsh of Ohio's Cuyahoga Valley National Park taking a quick bath. In the first frame, the heron stands stoically in the cold, deep, March water, submerged to the top of its long legs. Subsequent shots depict it bathing, fluffing up in preparation before plunging its bill and then most of its body into the water and shaking off droplets from its feathers when it resurfaces. As it climbs onto the bank, water cascades from its plumage, and with a few vigorous shakes, it completes the drying process. The final image shows the heron resuming its stern gaze and posture, ready to continue its vigilant watch over the marsh.
