A great blue heron wades through NE Ohio's Beaver Marsh. It is a chilly December afternoon, and it was cold enough the night before that a thin skin of ice can be seen on parts of the water. Many herons migrate south for the winter, but some stay put and brave the cold. It appears that this is one of the latter.
This one had been wading slowly, hoping to spot a fish, but now he seems slightly alarmed and is crouching down. He will, in a few seconds, take off and fly out of the marsh.
The Beaver Marsh is part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and is on land reclaimed from industrial use and allowed to return to nature.

Hello and welcome to my imagination! My interest in computers started back in college in the days of punch cards and led me to a career in engineering. My passion for photography started with film cameras and a portrait that earned a blue ribbon at the county fair. Now, after a 42 year career designing machines in the U.S. Midwest, I am putting my artistic side first and trading patents for pixels, ergonomics for aesthetics and practicality for pleasure. Please browse through my work and hopefully you will enjoy it as much as I enjoyed making it! A wonderful feature in the Artist Group. Beautifully composed heron with reflection in cold water , with thin skin of ice, against golden warm glow for perfect contrast , reflection is great , and concentric circle give movement vs. crouched silence , also blurred back round reflection give impression of movement vs stillness of foreground and subject. Well done Dennis.
