Description
A view of the Wingfoot One airship inside Goodyear’s Wingfoot Lake hangar in Suffield, Ohio, taken during an open house a month before its christening on Aug. 23, 2014.
Wingfoot One was the first of a new generation of Goodyear Blimps built on the New Technology (NT) platform developed by Germany's ZLT Zeppelin Luftschifftechnik and customized to Goodyear’s needs. The first semi-rigid airship ever constructed for Goodyear was built in Suffield, Oh. at Wingfoot Lake by Zeppelin and Goodyear associates. Since it first took flight, Wingfoot One has provided aerial coverage of numerous major sporting events.
Bigger and faster, Wingfoot One and its 3 sister airships have since replaced the previous generation of blimps.
Constructed in 1917 by the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, the Wingfoot Lake Hangar was originally designed for the testing and construction of aircraft. Throughout World War I and II, Goodyear played a crucial role in building and manufacturing blimps for the U.S. Navy, with the site serving as the training ground for the first class of Navy airship pilots.
The hangar continues to serve as the focal point for the operations of the Goodyear Blimps, maintaining its historical significance as the oldest airship hangar in the United States.
