Description
Tracking the great blue heron’s departure a little farther along Ohio’s CVNP Beaver Marsh suddenly makes the reason he has decided to leave a little clearer.
Coming in from the east is another, larger heron, and it appears that our new friend has decided that discretion is the better part of valor!
In spite of swooping in so low, the bigger bird apparently had no interest in the smaller heron’s fishing spot, as he flew past the boardwalk area and settled in a more remote corner of the marsh. Meanwhile, the smaller bird turned to the east and flew out of sight.

I have these guys in the urban forest where I hike, Dennis. They're extremely territorial.
Dennis Lundell replied:
I think you are right, Cheri, they never seem to fish together. But they do build their nests pretty close together in large groups.
