Description
The heron holds his catch up high, as if to show it off to the world. He spends a fair amount of time doing this, but there is a reason beyond showing off.
By being patient and holding the catfish out of the water, and occasionally giving it a violent shake, he wears it out and waits for it to succumb to its injuries and go limp.
Unlike birds like eagles and hawks, herons’ bills and talons are not suited to tearing up their prey into pieces to eat. Instead, they swallow their prey whole.
Since catfish have particularly nasty spines on their fins it is important for the bird to wait for the fish to stop struggling so that he can swallow it without injury.
