Description
A common snapping turtle floats at the surface of NE Ohio's Beaver Marsh, with his much smaller friend, a midland painted turtle, just off his flank.
One might wonder why the little guy would want to hang around such a dangerous biter. Especially one that, if hungry enough, would have no compunctions about feeding on another turtle.
A few minutes obsevation reveals that the smaller turtle will actually get a meal off the back of the snapper. As the snapper floats motionless, the midland painted turtle will brace himself against the larger turtle's shell and munch on the hair-like plant growth on his back.
A symbiotic relationship: One turtle gets a meal, while the other a streamlining haircut!
