Description
A great blue heron stands stoically on one leg in the remnants of the Ohio and Erie Canal, just south of the Beaver Marsh.
The Beaver Marsh is part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and is on land reclaimed from industrial use and allowed to return to nature.
Although most of these beautiful birds migrate south for the winter, there are a few that stay and brave the winter cold. This photo was taken on a day at the start of a warming trend and the ice on the marsh is starting to melt. This is good news for him, as ice cutting off his fishing access is the big threat to his survival.
