A close-up of the great blue heron just after takeoff, flying low over Ohio’s CVNP Beaver Marsh. It is a chilly December afternoon, and it was cold enough the night before that a thin skin of ice can be seen on parts of the water.
The Beaver Marsh is part of the Cuyahoga Valley National Park in Ohio on land reclaimed from industrial use and allowed to return to nature.
